This Week in JK

Happy Thanksgiving
Thank you to all who participated in the family feather decorating project. Our turkey is unique to our class and we love it!

Art
Students are painting with legos to make the kernels on their Indian corn project.

Center Time Activities
We practiced matching letters to spell out Thanksgiving fruits and veggies that we might see in a cornucopia.

We put new puzzles together and baked initial sound pies. :)

We baked pies in the JK Bakery at the dramatic play center.

We practice identifying the difference between numbers and letters.

Socktober Contest Winners
Based on a socks collected per student ratio, our JK class was awarded this awesome trophy and a root beer float party for collecting the most socks for families in need. Thank you to all of the JK families that were able to donate, and thank you to Miss Seeklander for organizing the event.

Cans, Cans, Cans
These kids are something else! They have hearts of gold, and it shows when you take a look at the number of cans we were able to collect and donate to the BAGS program here in Groton and to the Salvation Army. They enjoyed building this pyramid just like the characters in the story, Thanks for Giving.

Dakota Prairie Museum Visits

Miss Mary from the Dakota Prairie Museum visited us on Thursday as the first part of a series of visits. Since we were studying community helpers this week, her lesson was on community helpers in the "olden days."

We learned about what it was like to be a barber and a basket weaver.

We learned about being a candle maker and a cobbler.

We learned how to comb wool to make clothes and what it might have been like to bargain for your produce.

We got to see a 100 year old firefighter belt and items that were once in a haberdashery.

We got to pretend we worked at a women's hat store and a candy store. We even got to try some old fashioned treats.

Here, students learned about being the miller and the glove maker.

We learned that teachers used chalkboards and read books made of linen.

Here, a toy store owner shows off the ice skates he made at his store and a homemaker demonstrates how clothes used to be washed.

A huge thanks to Miss Mary! She did an amazing job with our kids and they all got the chance to participate. We can't wait for her to come back in December to talk about old fashioned toys.

This Week in JK

V is for Voting
We celebrated election day JK style. Students had to get in line to get their ballets (no driver's licenses were necessary), they went to their private booth, and cast their vote for their favorite way to eat corn.

And the winner is...
CORN ON THE COB!

Science Center
The science center has been very popular this week. We have added a few new things to the center including this fun game comparing materials.

We also added some beans

These little architects are proud of their work in the building center!

Math
Our number of the week is 6. Student has to come up with different ways to show 6 using their fingers.

Recess is fun with friends!

Football Bus Sendoff
We cheered as the football team left for the state championship. We learned a new cheer and spelled T-I-G-E-R-S! Mrs. Johnson "happened" to be passing by just as I was snapping a picture.

 Here they come!

This Week in JK

Nocturnal Animals Week (Self-proclaimed)

We are about to embark on our Nocturnal Day adventures!

Clipboards...check!  Flashlights...check!  Extra staff and our principal to lead groups in the dark...check!

We're going on a letter hunt!

So much fun had by all!

We even celebrated during library by making nocturnal animal masks. Thanks Mrs. Kjelden.

 Our favorite books this week...

Am I Nocturnal?
Students chose six animals to use for this project. They had to decide if each of the animals was nocturnal or not. They practiced writing "yes" and "no" under each picture. We also practiced proper gluing techniques. :)

Center Time
Students at the writing center are making nocturnal animals books and the sensory center features some kinetic sand.

These boys enjoyed the science center this week. Our science center does not feature a certain task. Rather, students explore and build from materials provided.

Legos and Lincoln logs continue to be a hit at the building center.

Recess
We have loved pretending to be animals at recess. However, this week we went back to the basics. Students wanted to play good old-fashioned games like four square, hop scotch, monkey bars and football.

Mystery Reader
Thank you to our latest mystery reader.
