This Week in JK

Science
This week in science, we studied the weather. On this particular day, we were predicting which everyday objects could be moved by the wind. We were lucky to have such a windy day and almost all of the objects tested were able to be pushed by the wind.

We have been recording the weather each day in our booklets. Unfortunately, we have seen the a lot of the same weather this week...cold and cloudy!

Math
We have been talking about number order and sequencing in math. Students were asked to hold these marker boards and arrange themselves in the correct order.

Our Foster Grandpa was also a great help in teaching students number order.

Center Time
We have an office at our dramatic play center. Students have been busy answering phones, taking messages, using staplers and tape, and having some coffee in the "break room".

 Art
We are half way done with our art project. These cool trees we painted will be divided into four and decorated to represent each of the four seasons.

Children's Theater
The Parent Action Committee (PAC) hosted a play directed by Mr. Swanson. We got to travel to the high school to watch their performance.

This Week in JK

Happy St. Patrick's Day
JK students celebrated St. Patrick's Day by making colored rice rainbows, dotted shamrocks, and pots of gold filled with our favorite treasures.

Dramatic Play Center
We had puppet shows galore this week. It's fun to hear what students come up with.

Science Center
With our study of ramps last week, students had the opportunity to build ramps and test out different objects at the science center. Would they roll or would they slide?

Listening Center
We needed more time with Dr. Seuss, so we added his stories to the listening center this week.

This Week in JK

Dakota Prairie Museum Visits
Miss Mary was with us again this week for an hour on Thursday. She taught us how to be mini museum workers. She gave us each artifacts found here in SD! We had to wear gloves to protect the artifacts while we cleaned, measured, and weighed them. It wasn't until the end when Miss Mary let us know what each of our artifacts was. Some were pieces of broken pots used to cook food. Others were rocks or bones made into tools like knives, sharpeners, and arrowheads.

Miss Mary helped us weigh the artifacts and record our results.

Our Favorite Books This Week
We made patchwork elephants in art to go along with Elmer the Elephant book series. Our patchwork elephants had to be colored with four colors of our choice making sure no two colors touched. It took some careful concentration, but we think they turned out great.

Science
We learned about vocabulary words "roll" and "slide" as students tested out how different objects moved down a ramp.

SDSU Student
You'll notice an SDSU student in the background of a few of our pictures this week.  All students in the early childhood program at SDSU are required to put in 15 hours of service work in an early childhood classroom. We were excited to have Miss Withers join us for a few days.

Rr is for Rainbow
Students learned about rainbows this week. We learned about the colors of the rainbow and how a little sunlight and a few water droplets is all that is needed to make a rainbow. Here, students are working on a colored rice project.

Rainbow Day
Students were encouraged to wear bright colors, stripes, or anything that reminded them of a rainbow. I think they did a wonderful job!

Our treat helper made these delicious rainbow fruit cups! How thoughtful!

Mystery Reader
Thank you to our latest mystery reader. We love hearing stories from friends and family!

Dr. Seuss
With Dr. Seuss having a birthday this week, we figured having a Dr. Seuss author study seemed perfect. We read many of his books, as seen on the smartboard, and we voted for our favorite. What Pet Should I Get was the winner!

Here are some of our favorite Dr. Seuss books!

We can kick back and relax with a good book in the reading center.

We played Dr. Seuss letter matching games in the ABC center.

Do-a-dotters were used to help us identify teen numbers on Cat in the Hat hats.

Ee is for Egg
In science and social studies this week, we talked about dental health. We put one egg in soda and one egg in water and let them sit overnight. The eggs represented tooth enamel. Observing what happened to the egg sitting in soda, helped remind us what types of food and drink can be unhealthy for our teeth.

One egg turned brown from the soda. However, brushing the egg helped to take care of some of the stain.

Ee is for Elephant
Students choose 4 colors to use on their patchwork elephant and we carefully colored in the patches making sure no two adjacent squares had the same color.

Ee is for Elf Engine :)
You put something ordinary into the dramatic play center, and JK students can turn it into something extraordinary! One of the students named this an Elf Engine for letter Ee week!
